Family denotes a group of people affiliated by a consanguinity, affinity or co-residence. Although the concept of consanguinity originally referred to relations by blood, anthropologists have argued that one must understand the idea of blood metaphorically, and that many societies understand family through other concepts rather than through genetic distance. One of the primary functions of the family is to produce and reproduce persons, biologically and socially. Thus, one`s experience of one`s family shifts over time. From the perspective of children, the family is a family of orientation: the family serves to locate children socially, and plays a major role in their enculturation and socialization. From the point of view of the parent, the family is a family of procreation the goal of which is to produce and enculturate and socialize children. However, producing children is not the only function of the family; in societies with a sexual division of labor, marriage, and the resulting relationship between two people, is necessary for the formation of an economically productive household.
Today it is found that people hardly have time for their children or their aged parents. A sense of ‘family’ or ‘togetherness’ is missing in many people’s lives. To address this issue the Chinmaya Mission has taken an initiative and organized some events to promote family harmony and togetherness.Under the pretext of the MARG Chennai Family Quiz’ families will be brought together for various events causing them to interact with each other in a positive manner. Since each family team will consist of seven members; the Quiz will be bringing together over 1 lakh families i.e. 7 lakh members over a span of three months in the year 2010.

A book titled ‘For the Family’ containing anecdotes on various important topics like relationships and health has been released for the same. The book will be given to the participating families free of cost on registration.
Eminent personalities like Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Dr Kiran Bedi, Mr. Surjith Singh Barnala (Governor, TN), Mr S P Balasubramaniam, Mrs Anuradha Sriram, Mr G R K Reddy (MD, MARG Ltd), Arun Jain (CEO, Polaris) have shown that they unanimously support this event.
Dr.Abdul Kalam in his letter says that he is sure; the family quiz will motivate the younger generation to preserve the family values and traditions.
The Chinmaya Mission is also conducting a workshop called PACT which teaches a holistic approach to managing family life. It benefits the family and the individual members of the family by helping them identify the possible problem causing factors in a relationship and teaching them how to deal with the problems by using innovative and creative solutions. They also help the family as well as the individual to evolve which is one of the goals of family life.
